WASHINGTON, D.C. – The DC Lottery announced that Eric Semasa Mele of Virginia has claimed the $1 million POWERBALL win for the game played Wednesday, August 11, was sold at Northwest Auto Repair & Valero Gas, 5420 New Hampshire Avenue, NW.

This is the DC Lottery’s second million-dollar POWERBALL win in 2021. While not uncommon for state lotteries, for the DC Lottery—the only city-run lottery in North America—multiple million-dollar wins in a single year is a first in recent memory.

On New Year’s Day, Carlos Mabry of Washington, D.C. learned of his $1 million win with POWERBALL’s First Millionaire of the Year promotion live on-air along with millions of viewers watching ABC’s broadcast of “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2021.”

“This comes just at the right time!” exclaimed Mele, the newest member of the DC Lottery’s Millionaires Club who operates a language learning program with his wife. Previously, the pair had only dreams of growing their business and investing. He joyously says this windfall will go a long way in helping them realize their goals.

“Million-dollar wins are the gold medals of the Lottery industry. In this competitive gaming environment, DC crowning two millionaires in one year is a sweep for players and the District,” comments Marketing and Communications Director Nicole Jordan. “The winner gets the life-changing prize amount, we get to celebrate yet another member of the DC Lottery’s Millionaires Club, and the year’s not over yet!” exclaimed Jordan noting that there are still $1 million winning opportunities remaining with the $1 Million Cash Extravaganza and Capital Fortune scratchers available at DC Lottery retailers.

The POWERBALL jackpot for this Saturday’s game is an estimated $322 million with a cash option of $235.4 million. In the District of Columbia, POWERBALL tickets can be purchased online or at your nearby DC Lottery retailer.

Starting August 23, 2021, a new Monday drawing was added to the POWERBALL lineup of drawings, currently held on Wednesday and Saturday. at 10:59 p.m. ET.
