DC Lottery Welcomes Its Newest Millionaire!
District Resident Mr. Mesfin Asmare claims first of three grand prizes in new $30 scratcher ticket
Washington, DC – In the midst of nationwide lottery buzz around two rapidly-escalating jackpots that now total more than $1.2 billion—the DC Lottery awarded its first $1 million grand prize its new $10 Million Cash Extravaganza scratcher. The winner—Mr. Mesfin Asmare—a District resident, purchased his winning ticket at Fair Liquors, 5008 New Hampshire Avenue, NW.
Introduced in September 2018, the $10 Million Cash Extravaganza features more than $10 million in total cash prizes, three top prizes of $1 million, and the best odds of becoming an instant millionaire in DC Lottery history.
Mr. Asmare says his game choice was strategic. “I was going for the million-dollar prize,” he smiled while describing how he’d purchased three tickets from his favorite lottery retailer on his way to work last Friday. “I scratched the tickets on the subway, saw that it was a big winner, stuffed it in my pocket and went to work,” Asmare laughed.
$10 Million Cash Extravaganza is a $30 game loaded with more than $10 million in total cash prizes including 60 instant prizes ranging from $3,000 to $30,000 and more than 13,400 prizes ranging from $100 to $1,000. Two $1 million prizes remain on this ticket that can be purchased at lottery retailers District-wide.
“We’re thrilled for Mr. Asmare’s million-dollar win,” said DC Lottery Executive Director Beth Bresnahan. “A perfect precursor to tomorrow’s record-setting Mega Millions jackpot, we hope his win a good omen for more winning for DC Lottery players,” she said referencing the estimated $868 million top prize available with Friday’s Mega Millions game, shattering the previous $667 million record set with the game played October 16. Prior to this record-breaking streak, the highest Mega Millions jackpot had been $656 million, set in March 2012. Tonight’s Powerball jackpot currently holds at an estimated $345 million, making it the 17th highest jackpot in the history of the Powerball game. The cash option for Friday’s Mega Millions game is $494 million. The jackpot for this game has not been hit since July 24, 2018.
The cash option for Wednesday’s Powerball game is $199 million. The Powerball jackpot was last won August 11, 2018.
